suitable capacities be installed and operated until the develop-

ment warrants conversion to the Automatic system.

(32). Any other exchanges that may be required in the future

at the small outlying towns on the Island or in the New Terri-

tories should be of Magneto type. This type is preferable to

(33). There are several types of Automatic Systems on the

market. In the United States two principal systems have been

evolved viz:- the Western Electric Company's "Panel" system

which has been adopted by the American Telegraph and Telephone

Co., in recent years for very large cities, and the "Strowger"

introduced some years ago by the Automatic Electric Coy., of

Chicago. The latter system is in use in a very large number of

the same type of "Strowger" plant is also made by the Northern Electric Coy. of Montreal and a number of exchanges of this

firm's make have been installed. Owing to the very large demend for Automatic equipment in America it is understood that no plant of either of these types will be available for

export abroad for some time to come.

In England the "Strowger" system, with various minor differences in constructional detail, is mede by three firms viz:- the Automatic Telephone Manufacturing Coy., Liverpool, Siemens Bros. & Coy., Woolwich, and the Peel-Conner Telephone Works Coventry. A180, another system which is operated en- tirely by means of relays, but which so far has only been adopted on small exchanges, is made by the Relay Automatic Telephone Coy., London.

(35). At Antwerp the Western Electric Coy's machine-driven "Rotary" system is made by the Bell Telephone Manufacturing Coy, and at Stockholm
